India Women Hockey Final: Savita Save Keeps India 1-0 Ahead

India Women Hockey Final

India led China 1-0 at half-time in the women’s hockey final at the Asian Games 2026 on October 2. China increased the pressure in the second quarter, but India’s defence held firm to preserve the narrow advantage in the gold-medal match.

The contest is being played at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara, with the Asian Games gold medal and direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics at stake. India are seeking their second women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games after their 1982 triumph.

The key moment of the first half came in the 23rd minute when China were awarded a penalty stroke following a foul by Sushila. Zhang Ying stepped up to take the opportunity, but Savita Punia produced a one-handed save to deny the equaliser.

Savita then reacted quickly again as China continued to test the Indian defence. Her intervention helped India retain their 1-0 advantage going into the half-time break.

China had enjoyed greater pressure during the second quarter, but India remained organised inside their defensive circle. The Indian side managed to prevent China from turning its attacking pressure into a goal.

The India women’s hockey final at the Asian Games 2026 remains closely contested, with India holding the only goal of the match at the interval. China’s pressure has increased as the final has progressed, making India’s defensive organisation particularly important.

The Savita Punia save proved crucial in keeping China from restoring parity. India will now need to maintain its concentration while looking for opportunities to extend the lead.

The second half will decide the Asian Games women’s hockey champion. China are expected to continue attacking, while India will look to protect their advantage and create chances of their own.
