Elon Musk SpaceX Share Giveaway: What It Means for US Kids

Elon Musk SpaceX

On Monday, October 19, 2026, Musk announced on X that he will give “one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America” next year. He added that it will be the first of several gifts. This Elon Musk SpaceX share giveaway could reach about 72 million children, according to a Business Insider estimate. That would be worth roughly $10.5 billion at the current price. Musk has not said how the shares would be structured or delivered.

Shotwell went first. In July, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell and her husband pledged one SpaceX share each for roughly 2 million children’s Trump Accounts, worth over $320 million at about $162 a share. Her shares were to go first to children aged 11 to 17 in below-average-income areas, with a slightly larger allocation near her home in central Texas.

How Trump Accounts Work. The program launched on July 4 with a one-time $1,000 Treasury contribution for babies born between 2025 and 2028. Before Shotwell’s pledge, President Trump said he expected Musk to donate SpaceX stock, and Musk had not commented publicly.

Anthropic’s pledge. According to Indian Express, Anthropic also announced on Monday that it will commit 5 percent of its shares to a public-good fund, ahead of a possible stock market debut. Musk replied that shares should go directly to the public, which he said is what he will do.

A single share will not change a family’s finances, and its value depends on the share price. Shotwell’s gift was priced at $160.42 when announced on July 6, and by late August the shares had dropped below that price. SpaceX went public at $135 a share weeks before her pledge. Children who receive a share would hold a stake in one stock rather than a diversified fund, which carries real risk.

Musk gave no timeline beyond “next year.” The key unanswered questions are who qualifies, how the shares would be held, and whether they would go into Trump Accounts or somewhere else. Details on those points should come before any shares move.
