Yuzvendra Chahal Explains Shreyas Iyer’s Hitting Technique Change

Shreyas Iyer’s century against West Indies on Tuesday showcased a change in his batting approach, with Punjab Kings teammate Yuzvendra Chahal explaining how the India captain has expanded his range of shots.

Iyer remained unbeaten on 102 off 43 balls as India chased down West Indies’ 172-run target in 14.4 overs in the first T20I in Lucknow. He reached his half-century in 26 deliveries before accelerating sharply to bring up his century with 16 more deliveries.

His ability to attack spin and deliveries outside the off stump stood out during the innings. According to Chahal, that range is part of a broader change in the way Iyer approaches his batting.

“When Shreyas came at the start, he used to go back and play the cut. Now he comes across, and if the midwicket fielder is up, he has that option as well,” Chahal said during a discussion on Star Sports.

Chahal added that Iyer’s reach makes it difficult for bowlers to settle on a safe line. If a delivery is bowled outside off stump, Iyer can use his reach to play over cover and mid-off, leaving fewer straightforward options for the bowler.

The Shreyas Iyer hitting technique change has therefore involved more than simply increasing his attacking intent. His movement and ability to access different parts of the field have also become important features of his batting.

Chahal also recalled his own experience bowling to Iyer in the nets. He said he had to bowl wider because anything closer could be hit over cover for six.

The Punjab Kings leg-spinner said that Iyer, around one or one-and-a-half years ago, was more inclined to hit the ball hard. His current approach, according to Chahal, places greater emphasis on timing.

That assessment offers an insight into Shreyas Iyer hitting technique, particularly the balance between power and timing that was visible during his century.

Iyer’s unbeaten 102 gave India an eight-wicket win and put him at the centre of the opening T20I. The Shreyas Iyer century also underlined how quickly he can shift gears once he settles at the crease.

For opposing bowlers, limiting his scoring options will remain a challenge when he can attack both sides of the field. Chahal’s explanation suggests that Iyer’s improved movement, reach, and timing have added another layer to his batting approach.
