Joby, An Air Taxi Operator, Pays $500 Million to Acquire a Defense Technology Company
In an effort to expand its operations in the expanding defense market, Joby Aviation (JOBY.N) announced on Tuesday that it would purchase defense technology firm Resonant Sciences for roughly $500 million.
Since commercial development has taken longer than anticipated and defense funding has increased due to conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, manufacturers of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) are concentrating more on the military sector.
Joby stated that it will transfer its defense initiatives, including hybrid and autonomous VTOL projects, under Resonant Sciences and keep working on its air taxi eVTOL.
Resonant, a Dayton, Ohio-based company, creates, produces, and supplies cutting-edge radio-frequency and mission systems to US national security clients.
According to Joby CEO JoeBen Bevirt, the company’s capabilities “help aircraft see, communicate, and operate in complex environments,” as reported by Reuters.
Thus, by combining Joby’s goods with Resonant’s technologies, this enables our commercial team to be laser focused on fulfilling the air taxi goal, thus opening up new markets for Joby, according to Bevirt.
Joby, a company situated in Santa Cruz, California, saw a 6.5% decline in premarket trading.
Joby anticipates using roughly $450 million in cash and $50 million of its ordinary stock to finance the transaction.
The merged business will have approximately one million square feet of production, integration, and testing space throughout the Dayton region as a result of the agreement, which is anticipated to completion in the first half of 2027.
After closing, Joby’s commercial aviation company will continue to concentrate on its electric air taxi activities, while Resonant will become Joby’s dedicated defense division, including its hybrid aircraft and autonomy technology.
